Chronic neck pain is SO prevalent for many of us…

Whether from bulged, compressed, degenerated discs, or lingering from a surgery like a fusion or rod being placed… we often cannot get a handle on truly healing the neck.

And for most of our clients- After about a thousand chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage treatments they finally get to a point where they are tired of just managing their symptoms, and instead want to figure out the root cause!

This is where a functional analysis of how the body is stabilizing itself from head to toe, in the variety of different ways we move each day, becomes the key in understanding the foundation the neck sits on (The T-spine, Lumbar, Pelvis, and even down to the feet) to figure out how to re-stabilize the whole body to support the neck correctly .

The neck has so much to do with the foundation that it sits on, so all these things make a huge impact to neck stabilizes:

  1.  What’s happening at the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle?
  2. How is the core stabilizing?
  3. What’s going on at the pelvis and how does it use the glute complex?
  4. Then finally, how are the feet & ankles impacting us from the ground up?

In the hundreds of clients we’ve worked with that have neck issues, we tend to find they have dysfunctional glute & core engagement, where it is either asymmetrical in which one side of the body is functioning different than the other, or it is a lack of activation entirely aka “dead butt syndrome” ;).

When we have these dysfunctions to the base of support that the neck sits on, well then it’s somewhat commonsense to figure the neck isn’t going to function very well either…

So, we must figure out how to re-stabilize the whole body to support the neck correctly; novel concept, right?

For instance, when our glutes and core musculatures are not engaging properly, the shoulders tend to roll forward, which then the neck starts falling forward…

And for every inch that our head goes forward, the amount of weight that your neck must absorb increases by roughly 10 pounds. This means that your neck which is designed to hold up your head (which is roughly 10-12lbs for the average person), all of a sudden is having to support an extra 10-20lbs (20-30lbs total)… and do it at a bad angle!

So what we really need to do to reduce the impact on our cervical discs, is find what are the full body alignment issues impacting our natural neck position, and through proper mobility and exercise techniques, reverse course to where the vertebrae are staying neutral and stacked again– We can do this by

  •       Waking up the glutes
  •       Strengthen the core
  •       Wake up our back musculature

You want these three to work in harmony depending on what your imbalance is, and the specific techniques you need to be doing should depend on your alignment.

Then, once you deal with the root causes, we can do techniques like this Banded Chin Tuck exercise to restabilize and strengthen the neck back to neutral.

If you do this type of neck stability work, while waking up the glutes, core & back stabilizers, you’ll make a massive difference to your whole kinetic chain… and of course the neck itself :)!
